Haphazard space becomes proud little bath By Sylvia Shaw The old sink and mirror were tossed for a large custom designed cabinet, with matching mirror, shelves and lighting. The dual white vessel sinks contrast smartly with the dark stained wood. A custom bulkhead with halogen lighting brightens the room, while floating shelves and extra side cabinets balance out the configuration. In some older homes the extra bathroom is a secret place, and for good reason. Installed originally for convenience and tolerated ever since, everyone tries not to think too much about it. That is until it is pressed into reluctant service for a house full of guests to the embarrassment of the owners.
Before: The old tub area had a rotten wood window and failing tub surround. Yet, as this low-key conversion shows, a small bathroom can claim glory through annexation and intelligent design. The new glass-walled walk-in shower features two showerheads, heated floors, intricate tile work, a seat and a glass block window, all in the same footprint. Completed by CCI Renovations of North Vancouver and named as one of the top two ensuite renovations in this year’s Georgie awards, the makeover merged separate and feuding factions into a harmony of function. Using the original location of a closet and the old sink/toilet and tub, the renovation created space, light and pride of place. From the Winter 2006/2007 edition of Home Makeover.
